Eco House

The house was architecturally designed and built around 2010. As Great Barrier Island is off the grid, it had to be quite self-sufficient. As a result, the house has a small carbon footprint. It is heated mostly by the sun, and water is heated by the solar water panels on the roof, or the wet back wood stove. All water comes from a creek that originates from a spring at the top of their land, and cooking is either done on the wood- or on the gas stove.

Power is generated by solar panels and stored in batteries - devices with heating elements are not so suitable - hair dryers, electric toasters and rice cookers are off the menu. Barrierites like living this way, making do, and 99% of our guests do too, but it is not for everyone.

When you walk into the lounge, panoramic windows ensure that you are not just looking at a view, but that you become part of it.
